RELIVE YOUR IDENTITY

WHAT: 48-Hour Soweto Immersion Retreat

WHEN: Tuesday 15 – Wednesday 16 June 2026, Youth Day

COST: 2 Days / 1 Night, R9 900

"Imagine sitting in a classroom designed deliberately by law to make you believe you were less than human. Imagine being taught a curriculum engineered to produce labourers, not leaders. Imagine doing that by candlelight in a township where the security forces could arrive at any moment. Now imagine choosing to resist anyway. That is what you are going to understand on 15 June 2026. From the inside."

Out of five experiences in the Relive Your Identity programme, this is the one that participants carry the longest. Not because it is the most dramatic, though it is, but because 48 hours changes your body, not just your mind. When you sleep where they slept, eat what they ate, and learn what was forbidden to them by law, your understanding of what happened becomes real. Permanent. Undeniable.

The 48-Hour Soweto Immersion Retreat runs across Youth Day, Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 June 2026. Participants spend two days living as 1976 Soweto students: township accommodation, freedom school sessions taught from the actual Bantu Education curriculum, underground resistance planning simulations, political bonfire discussions led by veterans who planned the real thing, and traditional meals served on the enamel plates and tin cups of an era that understood what dignity being taken looks like.

🌙 48 HOURS THAT PRODUCE A LIFETIME OF UNDERSTANDING

✦ Freedom School, Day 1: The Bantu Education curriculum taught as it was, so you feel what students felt when they were told this was the limit of what they were allowed to know.

✦ Underground planning simulation: How did students organise resistance with no phones, no internet, and surveillance at every turn? You will find out by doing it.

✦ Political bonfire discussion: The same format as the real planning sessions, seated around a fire with veterans, speaking freely about resistance, courage, and what today's youth are called to do.

✦ Township overnight: Sleep in Soweto. Wake up in Soweto. Understand from the inside what it means to call that township home in 1976. And what it still means today.

✦ Legacy commitment session, Day 2: Each participant articulates one specific commitment they are making as a result of the retreat. Read aloud. Witnessed. Preserved.

This experience coincides with Youth Day — 16 June 2026. There is no more powerful way to honour Youth Day than to spend it the way the students of 1976 would have recognised: in a township, in a classroom, around a fire, and planning what comes next. This is what Youth Day was always meant to feel like.

"I cried at dinner on the first night. Not because the food was bad, it wasn't. Because eating off an enamel plate by candlelight in a Soweto B&B on the night before Youth Day, after spending the day being taught that I wasn't supposed to be able to think for myself, I finally understood what my mother meant when she said 'they tried to take everything.' Everything means everything."

Tomorrow: the event that makes the walls of a Soweto community hall shake.

I will tell you about freedom songs, not as music, but as a strategic weapon used against apartheid. Coded messages. Morale engineering. Spiritual armour. And on 23 June, 50 young South Africans are going to learn every word and then perform them publicly, as loud as they were meant to be. Tomorrow's email is the most joyful one in this campaign. And the most powerful.

Know someone who should be on that retreat?

The seats will not wait.
