And Landed His First Gig in a Few Days

Retail job paying R5 500 a month
Zero clients.
Zero portfolio.
The Problem: Every client wanted to "see previous work."
But how do you show work you've never done?
The Solution: He created practice projects.
Here's what he did:
Week 1:
Chose 3 real brands (bakery, hair salon, gym)
Created 30 days of Instagram content for each (graphics, captions and hashtag strategy)
Designed everything in Canva (free version)
Posted it all on a simple Notion page (also free)
Week 2:
Sent his "portfolio" to 40 small businesses
Pitched: "I created this sample campaign for your brand to show you my style. If you like it, let's talk about working together."
Week 3:
7 responses
3 discovery calls
1 client: R5 000 a month retainer
Total time invested: 18 hours
Total money invested: R0
Result: R5 000 a month client
He started making R20 000 a month with 4 retainer clients.
Here's the secret:
Clients don't actually care if you've been PAID before.
They care if you can DO THE WORK.
Practice projects prove you can.
And here's the beautiful part: They're faster to create than you think.
Social media content: 1-2 days
Logo designs: 2-3 days
Blog post samples: 1 day
E-mail sequences: 1 day
